The sign on the wooden house, that’s a bit behind the road and easily missed, reads “Hill-tribes Resources And Development Centre”, but as we later found out the name has changed to “Musekee” (that’s the name of the land of the Karen tribe, known to Thai people as “Kala Wani Nat Ana”).

The first ones to greet us were a bunch of cute and friendly puppies, and then we met Nam Su, who was excited and said she will call her teacher. We’ll tell you a bit about her too, later on.

A few minutes later we met Tete, a 62 years old woman, with kind eyes, an optimistic vision, hoarse voice and loving presence. She runs the place, which has been around for more than 30 years.

She came from India and married a Karen tribe man in Thailand.

The center was made in order to preserve the Karen tribe culture and heritage and offer what little help can be offered to help tribe members.

The Karen we’re among the first to rebel against the military junta in Myanmar (they now control parts of the Karen state, but face ongoing attacks from the military). Due to the civil war still active in large parts of Myanmar, there are many refugees in refugee camps along the Thai border, and Tete is there to receive and care for those in need, especially orphaned children.

There are currently 32 kids in the orphanage, aged between 7-17.

They all share 2 separate dormitories, one for girls, the other for the boys.

The wooden structures on which they sleep suffer from termite infestation and are in need of repair.

The tennis table is about to collapse and hanging on by improvised interventions and sheer will.

The children seem happy (considering their tragic traumatic story, each with his own)  and well taken care of. We were very embarrassed and excited to stand in front of them and listen to their singing, and experienced a wave of joy, seeing them excited to go through the items we collected from our home and our friend’s homes for them to have.

Apart from Tete, Nam Su is also a teacher at the orphanage. She has been teaching kids at the refugee camps along the border and escaped with her children to Thailand.

All the photos and videos we took were made after asking and receiving consent to shoot and share them.

We asked Tete what her biggest pains and challenges are, and how best we can help out. This is what she replied:

• The Dining Hall: They have laid concrete foundations for a new dining hall, but now the lack the funds needed in order to complete it. Have yet to receive an estimate cost for this project.
  If you can help out with construction in any way, or know someone else who can, raise your hand.
• Electricity: Prices are going up, and it’s a major challenge. A member of this group, who’s welcome to introduce himself, has offered a hand in installing solar panels and reached out to someone in Chiang Mai to produce the materials, but it hasn’t worked out. A rough estimate he gave us, true to last year, was 10K$. If you know someone in the industry that can lend his expertise, let us know. Maybe possible to do it gradually? Anyway, it should be part of a fundraiser effort, in my opinion.
• Scholarships: Tete is worried, and rightly so, about the fate of the older boys and girls, who can’t afford to get an education. We should all realize that some of them will end up trafficked, part of the sex industry or committing distress crimes. A year of education costs roughly about 16K THB a year, not including housing and food. This is a chance to change a man or a woman’s life for the better and make an impact.

הקשר המפתיע לשבטי ישראל שעלה בביקור בבית יתומים בורמזי

מרוב שאנו עסוקים בצרותינו, קל לפעמים לשכוח מחלקים אחרים בעולם שגם בהם מתרחשות זוועות, ומלחמות.

מיאנמר, בורמה לשעבר, היא מדינה שכזו.

המדינה הכריזה עצמאות ב-1948, ומאז מתקיימים בה מאבקים מזוינים בין חלקים שונים באוכלוסייה. ב-2021 פרצה בה מלחמת אזרחים וחונטה צבאית השתלטה על המדינה (אתם מוזמנים לקרוא בהרחבה על ההיסטוריה של המדינה בערך הויקיפדיה שלה). מצב זה הוביל לרדיפה של שבטים מקומיים, ויצר פליטים רבים שבורחים מהמלחמה ונסים על נפשם.

בעיירה Chaem Luang, מרחק של כשעה נסיעה מפאי (יש גם מעיינות חמים חינמיים בדרך), בתאילנד, נגלה לנו סיפור אישי שכזה. במקום ישנו מרכז שבטי של שבט הקארן (האמיצים שהיו מהראשונים להתקומם כנגד השלטון הצבאי) המשמש כיום כבית יתומים.

לקחנו חלק במיזם חברתי שנועד לתמוך ולסייע למקום שחווה קשיים כלכליים ותחזוקתיים בעקבות משבר הקורונה, וכך נסענו מלאי כל טוב שאספנו מביתנו ומחברינו לשמח ולחזק את בית היתומים.

כפי שבד”כ קורה, אנחנו אלה שיצאנו מחוזקים והסיפור שנגלה בפנינו גרם לשערות שלי לסמור, ומקווה שייגע גם בכם.

את המקום מנהלת Tete (טֶטֶה). אישה בשנות ה-60 לחייה. היא בכלל הודית שהגיעה לתאילנד לפני שנים רבות והתחתנה עם בן שבט הקארן. כשהיא שומעת שאנחנו מישראל, היא מתרגשת לפתע וניגשת להביא דבר מה. כשהיא חוזרת היא מניחה על השולחן ספר שכותרתו “ISRAEL-MIZO IDENTITY” וכך מתגלה לנו מעט מסיפור חייה. מסתבר, שהמקום שממנו היא מגיעה בהודו (MIZORAM), ותושביו (CHHINLUNG TRIBE), התגלו כחלק משבט מנשה האבודים. כך קבע ב-2005 הרב הספרדי הראשי, שלמה עמר, בתום מחקר היסטורי נרחב. היא ואנו חשים שוב שאין מקריות בעולם, וחולקים רגע של אינטימיות שקטה ומקרבת.


המרכז נבנה במטרה לשרת את צרכיהם של בני שבט הקארן, אך כיום הוא משמש כבית מחסה ל-32 יתומים ופליטים בורמזים (בגילאי 6-17). טטה מתארת בפנינו בגילוי לב על הרצון שלה לתמוך בהם ולספק לעוד פליטים קורת גג וסיוע, אך אמצעיה דלים והמרכז זקוק לעזרה. מערכת החשמל במקום לא יציבה והמרכז לא יכול לשאת בעלויות החשמל שלו. הבניינים שלו מטים לנפול. חדר האוכל שתכננה להקים עומד חשוף על יסודות בטון שניצקו מלפני הקורונה. הילדות זקוקות למוצרי היגיינה נשית. ותמיד צריך אוכל. טטה אופטימית ומאמינה שהיא תצליח להקים עסק כלשהו שיפרנס במעט את המרכז ויתמוך בילדים.

במקום אנחנו פוגשים חברים נוספים שבאו לתמוך, ושומעים על המיזם להקמת רשת חשמל סולארית, שמוערכת בכ-10K$, אך כרגע אין שום אפשרות לקדמה בגלל היעדר התקציב.

החלום של טטה הוא לתת לילדים חינוך ומלגות ללימודים גבוהים. היא מבינה טוב שדגים לא יעזרו לטווח הארוך, צריך חכה. היא פנתה לגורמים מקומיים בתאילנד, אך לאור היותם בורמזים, הם לא זכאים לתמיכת ממשלת תאילנד, ומסתייעים בתורמים וביוזמות נקודתיות.
